Intercity Transit Earn-A-Bike Classes

Earn-A-Bike classes teach middle school youth in Thurston County the skills needed to safely bike for transportation. Students learn and practice riding safely on the road, plus basic bike mechanics. After successfully completing eight hours of instruction, graduates are offered a refurbished bicycle and accessories.

Earn-A-Bike at a glance

  • Free, after school program offered at one host middle school each year.
  • Low-cost summer classes offered in July in coordination with city parks and recreation programs.
  • Students ride local roads under the direction of our instructors.

What will students learn?

  • Essential bicycle maintenance like fixing a flat tire, chain care and brake tuning.
  • Traffic laws for bicyclists.
  • Emergency braking techniques and other bike handling skills.
  • How to communicate with others on the road.
  • Safe route planning.

Where to sign up?

We are offering Earn-A-Bike as remote-learning through local parks and recreation departments. Students who enroll will receive instructions and links to a series of short educational videos with embedded quizzes. Students who successfully complete these quizzes will be offered a refurbished bicycle, helmet, and accessories.

This program is open to all youth ages 11 through 17 who live in Thurston County. Classes are self-paced and online. Bike and helmet fittings will take place in our bike shop in downtown Olympia across from the Olympia Transit Center.

Are you an experienced commuter who is good with kids? Come ride with us and our highly trained staff to help teach local youth essential riding skills. Training is provided. You must be available weekday afternoons.
